FEATURED ON:
So if I were to explain Farms Race to someone new, I would liken it as a mash up between Risk and Settlers of Catan. The building and resources of Catan, but the combat of Risk - where even with superior numbers, you might not be successful in your attacks.
I do, however, have a few critique points:
- The rules, while comprehensive, were not presented in the clearest way possible. As a result, for my group's first play of the game, we didn't even catch that you got victory points from conquering an opponent's territory. This resulted in combat being stifled until very late in the game.
- Combat against the humans at the start is an interesting task, but it feels far too easy to simply eliminate the humans. Moreover, for at least the first 30 or so minutes, it was never the correct action to attack an opponent when you could take a territory from the humans.
- I like that you have a limited number of armies, but I don't know if the rules ever addressed whether or not you need to leave at least one unit in a territory to retain control of it. I certainly didn't see that clarification and, when you have a limited number of armies, this makes it difficult to really stretch through the map.
- I'm still not entirely sure what the farmer side of the attack dice really represents. I know it counts as damage against humans and not for humans to damage you, but I admittedly also didn't engage in much player v player combat until there were enough nukes around to be able to just nuke a territory twice and march in unopposed.
- The fact that you can double nuke a territory and just march in seems a bit too easy. It would be more interesting if territories that are nuked cannot be occupied or otherwise damage units that are in it for as many turns as it has a nuke token on it - so like radioactive fallout. This would then make use of nukes a bit more strategic and might give a reason to hold back with them in some cases.
Overall an interesting and amusing game. I'm sure we got plenty wrong on the first playthrough, but I will review the rules again and we will crack it open the next time we want to play adversarial Catan.
Farms Race
Love this game! The mats are outstanding quality.
Me and my grandma love to play games and farms race is one of our favorite
Played this game yesterday with 3 friends. It really is a great game. I was pleasantly surprised about the combat interactions, and the resource management.
It really is a better version of Catan. Thank God you kan nuke your peaty neighbors, when they take a spot on the map that u want.
I hope you guys produce an expansion for 5-6 players. Maybe with a team variant? ;)
FAQs
What is Farms Race?
Farms Race is the supreme leader of board games. It’s light-hearted, aggressive, and plays like Catan with nukes.
Is it good?
Over 100% of our playtesters gave it positive reviews, according to internal polling.
What's so good about it?
It's fast-paced, asymmetric, well-balanced, and accessible. It's also pretty funny, if we do say so ourselves.
Where are the tech trees, variable unit types, and complex economic engines, like in Eclipse and Scythe?
We think the best strategy games are like Go and Chess - the rules are simple but the choices are complex and meaningful. So that’s what we did with Farms Race: every turn you have a small number of important decisions to make, and you need to pay a lot of attention to what’s going on around you. Don't get us wrong though, we love Eclipse and Scythe!
What’s all this about “Euros”?
Euros, or German-style games, are peaceful trading games like Catan, Agricola, and Carcassonne. They offer idyllic pastoral escapism to anxious nerds, and winning is about as exciting as counting sheep (we’re looking at you Agricola).
Farms Race parodies the genre by mixing familiar Euro-style themes with a more historically accurate dose of conflict and warfare.
Wow… so “Euro” and “Gyro” are different then?
Yes. We love them both but you can’t eat a “Euro”.
So do you or don’t you like “Euros”?
We like them but, as ‘Muricans, we think they need nukes and guns.
Are you communists?
No. We believe in a kind of anarcho-syndicalist commune. See here for more info.
But Farms Race is communist, right?
Yes, definitely. Pig brother is watching.
Is that Kim Jong-un on one of the cards?
That’s just a totally normal sheep who might nuke you at any given moment for no
reason.
What can Farms Race teach me about the decline of American democracy?
Oh, you’re not going to learn *anything* by playing; we promise.
