FEATURED ON:
Farms Race is a nice war game that is simple and doesn't take 4 hours. (It typically takes 90 minutes for us). It has resource and placement strategies like Catan, but you have to watch out for your friends (who are now your enemies) trying to take your Plutonium and Weapons hexes by nuking you and buy attacking you. Especially when they build an Armory or two.
This is the Nukiest game around.
We played a 5 player game and we had a blast. We messed on one rule but will make the correction the next time we play. Lots of fun. Dropping nukes is so much fun!
Farms Race as a whole is just simple enough to remain engaging and competitive, but has enough choices to always keep the game fresh (the mutation cards being the main highlight). The only minor complaint we have come across is the small amount of victory tokens (isn’t enough to be fully represented on all boards if player count is 4-5), so we have relegated to using them only during battles to keep an accurate count. The players will just simply count the building to determine those set of victory points. Farms Race has become a staple in our household board game night and parties, and whenever we do attend a board game night Farms Race presence is always a must. Thank you so much for the amazing experience, and we look forward to the first expansion coming soon!
This game did NOT disappoint. I grew up playing Risk, and I am a big fan of Catan. Farms Race combines both of these games into one, with added flair! I’m very pleased a friend of mine recommended I pick it up.
Great game - catan with extras - so much fun. Glad I went for the 5 player.
FAQs
What is Farms Race?
Farms Race is the supreme leader of board games. It’s light-hearted, aggressive, and plays like Catan with nukes.
Is it good?
Over 100% of our playtesters gave it positive reviews, according to internal polling.
What's so good about it?
It's fast-paced, asymmetric, well-balanced, and accessible. It's also pretty funny, if we do say so ourselves.
Where are the tech trees, variable unit types, and complex economic engines, like in Eclipse and Scythe?
We think the best strategy games are like Go and Chess - the rules are simple but the choices are complex and meaningful. So that’s what we did with Farms Race: every turn you have a small number of important decisions to make, and you need to pay a lot of attention to what’s going on around you. Don't get us wrong though, we love Eclipse and Scythe!
What’s all this about “Euros”?
Euros, or German-style games, are peaceful trading games like Catan, Agricola, and Carcassonne. They offer idyllic pastoral escapism to anxious nerds, and winning is about as exciting as counting sheep (we’re looking at you Agricola).
Farms Race parodies the genre by mixing familiar Euro-style themes with a more historically accurate dose of conflict and warfare.
Wow… so “Euro” and “Gyro” are different then?
Yes. We love them both but you can’t eat a “Euro”.
So do you or don’t you like “Euros”?
We like them but, as ‘Muricans, we think they need nukes and guns.
Are you communists?
No. We believe in a kind of anarcho-syndicalist commune. See here for more info.
But Farms Race is communist, right?
Yes, definitely. Pig brother is watching.
Is that Kim Jong-un on one of the cards?
That’s just a totally normal sheep who might nuke you at any given moment for no
reason.
What can Farms Race teach me about the decline of American democracy?
Oh, you’re not going to learn *anything* by playing; we promise.
